United We Stand

The Red and The Blue.     Week 3: United We Stand     Study Guide

Main Idea: Are we willing to put our faith filter ahead of our political filter?

Key Scripture: John 17:20-23

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Key Principles:

  1. We desperately need each other.
  2. We err on the side of “for” not “against”.
  3. We love like Jesus loved.

Discussion Questions:

  • If you said the Pledge of Allegiance as a kid, what did you think “indivisible” meant?
  • Are you a social media fighter, avoider, or peacemaker? How did you become this way?
  • Read Romans 12:4-5. What role do you play in the body of Christ, the Church?
  • What do you think are some of the greatest causes of disunity among Christians? No wrong answers.
  • Have you ever personally experienced disunity among believers? What did you learn?
  • Do you know any Christians who gave up on the Church because of disunity? How can we reach out to these people?
  • Do you ever look down on any styles or denominations within Christianity? What steps do you think lead our attitudes in that direction?
  • What are some of the ways you personally can create more unity in Christianity?

Next Steps: Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  • If you’ve ever judged or hurt someone because of their differences, apologize. If you’ve been hurt, forgive.
  • Ask someone to keep you accountable to taking your steps.

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

  • Jesus, you prayed that we—your Church—would be united so we could show the world Your love. We come to You humbly to ask Your forgiveness for the ways we’ve allowed or caused division. We also ask You for opportunities, strength, and wisdom to live in unity with each other and our neighbors. Amen.
