Stiller of Storms

JESUS THE MIRACLE WORKER            WEEK 1 : STILLER OF STORMS                  STUDY GUIDE

Main idea: Knowing who Jesus is and experiencing what he has done will help us to endure life’s darkest of days and fiercest of storms.

Key Scripture: Mark 4:35-41

Key Principles: 3 purposes for the storm

  1. The storm reveals the depths of who we are.
  2. The storm reveals the depths of who Jesus is.
  3. The storm comes and turns our faithlessness into faithfulness.

Discussion Questions:

Read Mark 4:35-41.

• Have you ever found yourself in a difficult situation and responding the way the disciples did in verse 38? What was the situation? What did it reveal about you?

• Based on Jesus’ response to them in verse 40, how should the disciples have responded in the midst of this storm? How does Jesus’ response undercut the false premise of their question in verse 38?

• Why do you think the disciples are more terrified after the storm than before? In what ways might it be both comforting and terrifying to be in Jesus’ presence?

•  Is it comforting to know that Jesus, in his sovereignty, led the disciples into this fierce storm? Why or why not?

• Do you trust that Jesus is fully God and in control of the storms? If not, why not? If so, how is that helpful to you and how do you exhibit that kind of faith in difficult times?

• What does this story teach us about God’s involvement in the storms of life? What does it teach us about God’s ways of dealing with the storms in our lives? What does it teach us about the way God uses the storms in our lives?

Next Steps

• What can you learn from this story about how to react to sudden, serious storms in your life and about how to engage with God in the midst of these crises?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

• Dear Jesus, when we face life’s storms, thank you for being beside us and giving us peace. Sometimes we don’t know what to do when we face these difficult times in our lives and it is so good to know you are waiting for us to come to you. Open our eyes to the places where we need to let you help us, guide us and change us. We need you. We love you. We long to live our lives in relationship with you. Come into our storms and give us the peace we need to live each day. Amen.
