Our Identity in Christ

CALLED INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS             WEEK 1: OUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST                   STUDY GUIDE

Main Idea: In Christ, we are set apart for the purpose of God’s glory.

Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

Key Principles:

  1. Holiness is your identity.
  2. The degree to which Christ has separated you from your sin—is the degree to which you need to separate sin from your life.
  3. Focus on the increase.

Discussion Questions:

  • The definition of holy is to be set apart for a single purpose. What do you think it means to be set apart for God’s purpose?
  • Do you think that a sermon on holiness is as relevant to today’s Christian as a sermon on marriage, finances, sex, or personal peace and happiness? Why or Why not?

Read 1 Corinthians 5:7-8.

  • What does it mean to clean out the old yeast and to be unleavened?
  • What do you think of the statement: The unrepentant sin of one person affects the entire Church? Do you agree with this? Why or why not?
  • Do you generally think of holiness as something that you are pursuing or as something that you already are in Christ?
  • Do you think that you take your holiness as seriously as God takes your holiness?
  • What areas of your life run the risk of decreasing your affections for Jesus? Are you willing to decrease the things that pull you away from him?

Next Steps: What steps can you take to be set apart for God’s purpose this week?

  • Take some time to examine the things in your life to see if they increase or decrease your affections for Jesus.
  • Let go of something in your life that is decreasing your affections for Jesus and focus on increasing the things that lead you closer to him.

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

  • Father, help me to pursue the things in my life that lead me closer to you and to remove the things that lead me away.
