Key Scriptures: Luke 7:11-15

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead man was being carried out–the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Lesson One: The divine purpose of God brought Jesus to Nain.
• God does not act without purpose. Everything within the plan of God is fixed, settled, and brought to pass

Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Isaiah 55:11, God says, My word which goes forth from my mouth shall not return to me void but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Isaiah 46:9-10, I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’

Luke chapter 9 verse 51, It came about when the days were approaching for his ascension, he resolutely set his face to go to Jerusalem. 

Lesson Two: The divine providence of God brought Jesus to Nain.
• God is sovereign and exercises control over all actions and events to affect his predetermined purpose
• God will orchestrate all of the contingencies to bring about his purpose in your life

Lesson Three: The divine compassion of God brought Jesus to Nain.
• It is the nature of God to feel compassion. 
• No boundaries, no rules, no laws can keep Jesus from expressing the depth of the compassion that he feels for those who are hurting

Luke 7:12-14, As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still.

In Exodus 33:19, And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 

Lamentations 3:22-23, Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Matthew 9:35-36, Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

 Mark 1:40-41, A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

Mark 8:1-2, During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.

Lesson Four: The divine power of God brought Jesus to Nain.

Luke 7:15, He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
