Key Scriptures: Jonah 1:1-3

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

Lesson One: Joppa is a place of decision.

Jonah 1:1-2, The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

Lesson Two: Tarshish was the place away from God’s presence.

Jonah 1:3, But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

Lesson Three: Sometimes it’s the decision, not the devil.

Lesson Four: Ninevah was where the presence of God was.

Jonah 3:5, The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

Psalm 1:1-2, Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law, day and night.

Lesson Five: Tarshish is often the easy decision.

Lesson Six: Ninevah is often the difficult decision.
