Key Scriptures: Luke 10:38-42, Matthew 6:25-34
Luke 10:38-42, As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are anxious and troubled about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen the good part, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Matthew 6:25-34, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
.
Distraction is the great enemy of devotion.
• The plan of the enemy is to distract us from the plans and purposes that God has set out for us you to accomplish in life
Luke 10:39-40, She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
.
Busyness and faithfulness are not the same thing.
• Spiritual activity does not necessarily mean genuine devotion
Luke 10:41, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are anxious and troubled about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.
.
Distraction moves toward devotion through discipline.
• God allows us the choice of our priorities vs his priorities
Luke10:42, Mary has chosen the good part, and it will not be taken away from her.
1 Timothy 4:7 But stay away from worthless stories that are typical of old women. Rather, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.
